I love my Dad Story Written By Nitin Sirsat

I love my Dad .

Android Jelly 4.1 Bean rollout is underway

By Sarah Halzack, Published: July 11

Stephen Lam/Reuters - An Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" mobile operating system logo is seen during Google I/O 2012 Conference at Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif. June 27, 2012.

Less than two weeks after Google first showcased Android Jelly Bean at its annual I/O developers’ conference, the operating system is starting to make its way onto Android-powered smartphones and tablets.

Google announced the rollout Tuesday evening in a post on its Google+ social network. Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ devices, the post said, would be the first to get the update. Jelly Bean is slated to come to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom soon after, and it will be featured on the new Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Compared with its predecessor, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean has improved photo sharing and viewing functionalities; packs a better keyboard and smarter predictive typing; and allows for more streamlined personalization of one’s home screen.

Jelly Bean, version 4.1 of the Android OS, also includes a redesign of how Google Search looks and works on mobile devices.

Google Nexus 7 obliterates every reason for buying the Kindle

July 12 (Bloomberg) — It’s the most-asked question by consumers about any new tech gadget: “Should I get this now or is something better coming along soon?”
For buyers of Amazon’s Kindle Fire, we now have the answer: You should have waited.
Google’s new Nexus 7 is aimed directly at the Kindle Fire, the seven-inch color tablet that was the runaway hit of the last holiday season. The Nexus 7 obliterates every reason for buying the current Kindle, and sets a high bar for whatever Amazon comes up with to replace it.
The Nexus 7 is Google’s first foray into selling a tablet under its own brand. It’s currently available for pre-order from Google Play, the company’s online store, with customer deliveries expected to begin next week. It costs $199 for a model with eight gigabytes of storage, same as the Kindle, or $249 for 16 gigabytes.
The device is manufactured by Taiwan-based Asustek, and Google chose its partner wisely. Asus makes some of the prettiest tablets and personal computers this side of Apple, and the Nexus 7 is as attractive and smooth as the Kindle Fire is chunky and clunky.
At 7.8 inches tall and 4.7 inches wide, the Nexus 7 is compact enough to slide into a jacket pocket. A rubbery, textured back makes it easy to grip. Like the Kindle Fire, it works only over a Wi-Fi connection; while the screens are the same size, the Nexus 7’s has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, compared to the Kindle Fire’s 1024 x 600.
More and Better
The Google tablet also has a more powerful, quad-core processor from Nvidia, twice the internal memory and better battery. At four-tenths of an inch thick and 12 ounces, it’s also thinner and 18 percent lighter.
Go down the list of standard tablet features, and the Nexus 7 wins every one. Camera? None for the Kindle; the Nexus has a front-facing camera and microphone for video calls.
Bluetooth? The Kindle doesn’t have it; the Nexus 7 does.
GPS? Yes on the Nexus, along with a newly-enhanced Google app that lets you save maps for use even when you’re offline. The Kindle has nothing like it.
The Kindle has the Nexus beat in one significant area: the depth and breadth of the online stores that are designed to keep them stuffed with content. The Kindle is deeply integrated with Amazon’s shops for e-books, music, movies and videos, which are all far richer than the sparsely stocked Google Play store.
Amazon Alternatives
On the other hand, Amazon makes an excellent free app that allows you to buy and read Kindle e-books on the Nexus 7. And there’s always Netflix for movies and Spotify for music, among many others, as long as you’re willing to manage the various accounts and log-ins yourself. (With the Kindle Fire, a single Amazon password is all you need.)
The Nexus 7 marks the debut of yet another iteration of the Android operating system: version 4.1, which Google calls “Jelly Bean.” (Who knows why Google’s sweets-themed naming system seems so much sillier than Apple’s big cats for its Mac releases?)
Google’s constant Android updates can be maddening for consumers, who often find that even recently purchased devices won’t run the latest software.
Still, this new version is the most polished yet. It’s fast and smooth, without any of the herky-jerkiness in reorienting the device from landscape to portrait, or in transitions from one screen to another, that afflicted earlier releases.
Google Now
There is also a passel of new features, notably Google Now. This is a neat app that, with a single finger-swipe, supplies useful information about where you are and what you’re doing at any given moment.
Right now, for example, it’s telling me how long it would take to drive home given current traffic conditions, what the weather’s like, nearby mass-transit departure times and the closest restaurants. At an airport, it might show flight information; in a city, nearby places of interest.
Of course, Android wouldn’t be Android without a head- scratcher or two. For instance, you can’t view your home screen or display all your apps in landscape mode. Google says it will address that one by the time Jelly Bean shows up on larger, iPad-size tablets.
And that’s the real endgame here. There’s no doubt Apple is Google’s No. 1 enemy in its struggle to establish Android on tablets, but no Android device has yet gained any traction going head-to-head against the mighty iPad. So Google, which needs a hit device to convince developers to help it dent Apple’s enormous lead in tablet-specific apps, went smaller and cheaper.
Apple, meanwhile, isn’t standing still; if reports are to be believed, it is working on its own smaller, cheaper iPad.
As for the Kindle Fire, in its current form you’d have to consider it collateral damage.

Satyamev Jayate: Why untouchability is still a tradition

New Delhi: Once again the team of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ was on target. It might be a hard fact to digest for urban Indians that the practice of untouchability is still prevalent in a nation that eyes to become one of the super-powers by the end of current decade, but shows like ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is a reality check for them.
The debate regarding the caste system is not a new thing; it’s been happening for years, and different pressure groups have come up with some solutions too, but these answers couldn’t curb the demon.
However, one thing has been done; people who were very open about their apparent superiority are not so extrovert now, especially in unfavourable conditions. But this has led to a silent discrimination which is much more effective than open boycott. At least, you know your opposition in the previous case.
Satyamev Jayate: Stars Aamir Khan has created
IBNLive
Things have become nasty in the past due to the violent clashes between different mindsets towards the caste system. Those who have seen Stalin K’s documentary ‘India Untouched’ would understand that the film hints towards the origin of the issue, which as per the film is the control of resources. He says on the show that inter-caste marriages can be an answer to untouchability, but this seems to be a very simplified answer, because why would a resourceful person marry his or her daughter or son to someone who is not so resourceful, if there is no mutual love involved.
So, doesn’t the society and the government need to work on providing financial security to one and all in order to bring everyone on the same platform. This needs to happen before the marriage.
Justice Dharmadhikari might not be wrong in his stance about not revealing his ancestral identity, but this also fetches attention towards the so called superiority of certain sections of the society. Why can’t we simply stop taking the names (and surnames) seriously? The more Aamir mentions ‘Manvendra Singh Chauhan’ of the ‘same’ community, the more established will be the importance of being from a privileged class.
Bezwada Wilson’s anxiety needs to be addressed. Why do we consider living a life of dignity as something brave? Talk about it, discuss about it but don’t shed tears.
Believe it or not, but gone are the days when Sanskrit was associated with Brahmins only. The language is losing battle against commercial courses, so it would be better for existing patrons to accept teachers such as Dr Kaushal Panwar, if they want to preserve the inheritance.
‘Satyamev Jayate’ is a good show and there are no doubts about the makers’ intentions unless something drastically gets revealed but ‘tch tch’ and ‘OMG’ are not going to help in the longer run.
Balwant Singh was an IAS, after clearing an examination and training aimed at testing the candidate’s patience and depth of social understanding. Why did he separate himself from the system? Probably because he never wished for sympathy.
The tenth episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ tried to put emphasis on a topic which might have appeared like a done to death discussion for many, but fortunately that doesn’t make discussing ‘untouchability’ a crime.

Though things have changed, still a lot remains to be be done to make our society label free.

Satyamev Jayate - Aamir Goes 'LOL'!

Newspapers have often explained the presence of insecticides and pesticides on our food and its effect on humans in the long run. The infamous 'rail farms' of Mumbai - farms located alongside railway tracks where food is grown using drain water - has often made it to top news in our papers. However, not much is done in this regard. Until now! The eighth episode of Satyamev Jayate shall hopefully change things around as it created a tremendous impact with the startling facts and reports. Definitely one of the most hard-hitting episodes of Satyamev Jayate!

The jolt comes in the beginning itself when Dr Rashmi Sanghi revealed that the poisonous endosulfan was present in breast milk of certain mothers and that too, believe it or not, 800% more than the permissible limit! Obviously, the toxins made their way into the mother's body through the food she consumed - fruits, vegetables, food grains etc - which is deemed 'nutritious'! If the consumers are suffering, what about the farmers who grow these crops and also live near their farms? Aamir Khan then exposed the problems faced by inhabitants at Kasargod, Kerela where pesticides was sprayed on crops for 25 long years resulting in some of the most shocking cases among the inhabitants. Children were born with deformed limbs, eyes, cerebral palsy etc while the others suffered from chronic diseases, regular miscarriages (some women reportedly suffered it as many as 10 times) and even cancer. The culprit - endosulfan.

In the northern part of the country, a passenger train runs from Bhatinda, Punjab to Bikaner, Rajasthan and is regularly boarded by sick farmers affected by the use of pesticides and who get cheap treatment in Rajasthan. Majority of the victims suffer from cancer and hence the name 'Cancer Train'. Both these instances have been widely reported by newspapers across the country but sadly didn't make an impact at all on governments and general public.

Many farmers that were interviewed revealed that they don't use any toxins on a portion of farm land and use the food grown there for themselves and their families! The rest of the production, where toxins were sprayed, is sold to the dealers which make their way to our markets! A question that arises is - how will we protect the crops and plantations from pests if pesticides are not sprayed on them? How will our productivity increase, especially when our population is growing day by day? This was also echoed by Rajju Shroff who runs United Phosphorus Ltd, the largest pesticide company in India. However, he went on to claim that pesticide is indispensible and without its use, farmers might even commit suicide! He made many more such claims, which led Aamir to break into an unexpected guffaw, the first in these eight episodes! Also, this was the first time that disagreement cropped up between guests on the shows and even argued to prove their point.

Shroff's points were obviously baseless and this was expected since he ran the biggest pesticide establishment and couldn't speak against its use. However, Aamir wonderfully proved that our food can be grown sans harmful toxins. Dr G V Ramanjaneyelu from Hyderabad explained his work in villages of Andhra Pradesh wherein crops were successfully grown without pesticides. The pesticides cost a bomb but Dr Ramanjaneyelu's Non-Pesticide Management (NPM) products cost as little as Rs 5-15! Towards the north-east, the state of Sikkim has put a ban on the pesticides and is in many ways the 'first organic state of the country'. In both Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim, productivity didn't suffer. Same goes for Kasargod, where endosulfan was banned in 2000 after which, production remained the same and health problems among the inhabitants too subsided.

Sadly, awareness about NPM is negligible in our country. Subsidies need to be implemented on organic farming and use of insecticides need to be stopped on an immediate basis. There's anyways enough stress and other kinds of pollution that is harming us. We don't want our foods to be harmful as well. Let's all raise a voice!

SATYAMEV JAYATE episode 7: Aamir Khan handles domestic violence with sensitivity

SATYAMEV JAYATE episode 7: Aamir Khan handles domestic violence with sensitivity

The actor-turned-chat show host discussed the issue with a studio audience composed entirely of men

“Patriarchy has defined masculinity such that men can’t cry even when their mothers die,” says an activist on the seventh episode of Satyamev Jayate. Aamir Khan adds, “I cry a lot.” The studio audience, composed entirely of men – the only women present are the victims – laughs nervously. You laugh too but realise that there’s a huge truth hidden behind that one statement. You recall all the other episodes when Aamir would shed tears listening to a victim recall his or her plight. Suddenly it’s no more about just being a sympathetic host or a good actor. It’s become the basis of changing patriarchal thought, the same thought that leads to domestic violence against women.

The best thing about this episode – which dealt with domestic violence – is the way Aamir brought out the fact that men are not born aggressors and all men are not violent. Instead of taking the easy way out of demonising the men and deifying the women, Aamir took a more balanced approach. He brought forward the viewpoints of women who have stayed in abusive marriages for several years, men who happily admit to browbeating their women, a male police officer who is working hard to end this crime and admits that change has to begin from his own team, activists who work for empowering women, and the men in the studio audience who have their own take on masculinity. Patriarchal thought about masculinity and the role of women in society is what causes men to behave violently and women to take it quietly. Aamir insisted towards the end of the show that it’s that thought that needs to be changed, and the change has to begin with the men. It’s a huge statement to make and the fact that he had the guts to do it on national television will hopefully turn the tide in a few households at least.

Ghut ghut ke kab tak jiyungi sakhi
Gumsum main ab naa rahungi sakhi

Satyamev Jayate’: Aamir Khan says treat the disabled as equals

‘Satyamev Jayate’: Aamir Khan says treat the disabled as equalsMumbai: The sixth episode of Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’ dealt with the disabled section of the Indian society. The host, who has succeeded in striking an emotional chord with the masses, spoke about how people generally treat their disabled countrymen.

Citing a number of inspirational messages through videos of disabled people, the episode discussed the rights to education for all, irrespective of physical ability.

However, the Indian society is seldom open to accepting people with physical or mental disability in the mainstream section. Most parents do not appreciate having disabled children in regular schools as they fear it might cast a negative impact on their children and hence institutions refrain from admitting disabled kids. And this indifferent attitude of people has been projected in the episode of the show.

The show played host to blind and lame men who narrated their inspiring stories and proved that they too could fall within the bracket of the fittest and survive with pride.

The audiences also stood witnesses to a noble initiate called ‘Amar Jyoti’, a school that welcomes all kinds of children and treats them as equals.

And equal treatment would only begin when the government takes appropriate measures to treat them as one among the many from the mainstream section of the society.

With over 6 crore people with disability in the Indian society, the need of the hour is to have disabled friendly infrastructure that will enable such people to have trouble free access to public places and vehicles.

The show also urged companies to hire men and women with disability so that they too could contribute to the Indian economy.

Captain Brar, a resident of Ahmedabad has set an example by setting up a company with over 270 disabled people employed. And according to him his company is doing exceptionally well because of their efforts and hard work.

At the end, Aamir spoke about the need to have inclusive educational institutions with quality teaching staff and infrastructure in place that will allow disabled children too to be a part of regular schools and have a normal upbringing.

Amir Khan Satyamev Jayate Episode 6 Sunday 10 June 2012

What does it take to become a true hero? Watch Satyamev Jayate at 11 a.m. on STAR Plus to find out.
Aamir asks, “What are the qualities required to become a hero? Beautiful face, fit body talent, intelligent mind?” No! Find out what is that quintessential quality only on Satyamev Jayate this Sunday at 11AM on STAR Plus.
People with disabilities have the same zeal and appreciation for life as the rest of us do. They can, and want to, participate in all aspects of life along with the mainstream. But people with disabilities get shunned, doubted, mocked and insulted. Access to public places and buildings is restricted and often impossible. Doors are closed for schooling and employment. India does not appear to be mature enough and understanding enough to recognise people with disabilities for what they are – people.

Persons With Disabilities

Episode 06: We Can Fly!

Shreya Chaturvedi is 11 and exudes an enviable zest for life. Another person with disability is Sai Prasad, who demonstrates similar enthusiasm, and he has taken flight, literally. Satyamev Jayate' viewers support Aamir's expose

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) Aamir Khan's effort to highlight malpractices in the medical profession in India through his path-breaking show "Satyamev Jayate" may have upset many doctors, but viewers agree that discreditable practices are widespread and the actor was indeed doing a great service and would "get support from all Indians."
"My husband is a diabetic and he refuses to visit the doctors for the simple reason that they might ask him to undergo mutliple tests and prescribe medicine which might not be suitable," Ajita Bajpai, a worried wife, wrote to IANS.
Her reaction followed Aamir's interview with IANS, wherein he refused to apologise to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for exposing the underbelly of the country's medical system.
"In one experience - a wrong injection was prescribed. A second opinion confirmed our fears. The prescribed injection had side effects and was totally unsuitable to be taken. Needless to say it was expensive as well. Currently I am just worried as to how I can get him to visit a right doctor and have his faith restored with correct treatment," she added.
Bajpai isn't the only one.
"I've lived in India and travelled there over 13 times over several decades. I've spoken to dozens of doctors, visited hospitals, talked to patients and surviving members who lost loved ones under doctors' care. Your medical industry is frightening," wrote a reader under the name Dee.
"Surgeons stop in the middle of operations (Chandigarh) to take tea breaks. Doctors examine women without gloves. Surgery patients must rent their own equipment (IV bags, you name it) which is jointly owned by the doctors, and is then reused. Parents are pressed for more money while their child is on the operating table. Many doctors have no clue about hygiene, the proper treatment for diabetes, and give sugar pills for everything.
"Many doctors who got their degree 20, 30 or 40 years ago have never gone back and learned anything new. India has allowed doctors to run wild. What is truly surprising is that it took a talk show, and not an official investigation, to bring this out," added Dee.
After the fourth episode of the show, where Aamir put the spotlight on medical malfeasance, an umbrella body of 21 medical institutions has asked Aamir to apologise as they feel he has insulted the noble profession. Of course, the star is in no such mood.
"I have not insulted the medical profession at all. I have the highest regard for the medical profession. In fact what is insulting to the medical profession is those doctors who are indulging in unethical practices. They have insulted the medical profession, not me," Aamir told IANS in an interview.
Several fans and doctors agree.
"Aamir Khan is doing a great duty towards the country by all means. He is doing whatever myself and all Indians wish to do but can't. However, he will get threats from all the culprits who are doing wrong practices. But he will get support from all the Indians," wrote Anil Kumar, a viewer from Kochi.
Davare V.R., a general medical practitioner living in Ahmednagar for the past 50 years, says whatever Aamir projected through his show is true.
"There is no reason IMA or any other medical association should blame him. He is doing social work, indirectly exposing the bad elements in the medical profession. And it is equally true that 40 percent of the medical practioners are looting the population.
"Being in this profession, I've gathered a lot of experience during the last 50 years. The situation was not of this gravity when I started working in 1961. But it is worsening," wrote in Davare.
While a viewer named Touqear Khateeb feels Aamir is a "money maker", Mumbai-based doctor M. Balasubramanian suggests that Aamir should add a disclaimer to his show to avoid such allegations.
"Ours is a democracy; so anybody is free to say anything on any subject or discuss it on TV with nationwide exposure. While Aamir Khan's intentions are noble and in the interest of our country, he should put a disclaimer that the views reflected in the programme do not necessarily reflect the views of all the people," said Balasubramanian, CEO, Shushrusha Hospital, Mumbai.
